The baker lays the cake on the counter
Well decorated creams read:
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY, WILL YOU MARRY ME?”
I smile,
Envisioning myself kneeling a few hours from now
But only for a moment
For when I pull out my wallet,
I freeze….

My mother couldn’t hear
The echoes of footsteps running down the corridors
She was glued to the TV
Watching “No One But You” on ZNBC
I entered her room, unnoticed
Rummaged through her handbag and worse
I stole five hundred kwacha from her purse!

After the famous soap was done
She asked me about it
I swore I never touched her purse
Vehemently refused
The money still in the breast pocket of my ‘Just Do It’ shirt
My brother Kaysiq Gong is whom I accused
Walked outside the next morning,
Unfazed, “Donning”, bought some sweets
And became champion among my friends
Of course I couldn’t comprehend
The full extent of my actions

That was sixteen years ago!

Today… It’s my girlfriend’s birthday
The day I have been waiting for
Knowing her transcends anyone
I have ever known before
Thus,
I ordered her
A hundred–fifty thousand kwacha cake!

The baker lays the cake on the counter
Well decorated creams read:
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY, WILL YOU MARRY ME?”
I smile,
Seeing myself on one knee
A little over two hours from now
I have wanted to ask her this for a long time
I just did not know how –

With hundred thousand already paid,
Still smiling,
I pull out my wallet
Knowing too darn well I only have seventy thousand in there
(Fifty for the cake and twenty for a cab)
My smile is short-lived,
I freeze…
For inside my wallet is only twenty thousand
Apparently,
Someone has stolen money from my wallet!
